“Carl the Goat” was pronounced dead over the weekend, as the 100-pound goat succumbed to injuries suffered following a bear attack in Wolcott, Connecticut, just north of I-84 near Waterbury, authorities announced.
Shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 26, the Wolcott Dog Pound received an emergency call from a local homeowner whose goat was attacked by a bear inside his electric fence enclosure. The homeowner was woken up by his dog barking at the screaming goat, and he fired off two rounds into the air while the bear was attacking the goat.
The homeowner then fired several rounds at the bear, causing it to release Carl. Officials noted that the homeowner is a licensed firearms owner. Carl suffered superficial claw marks and several lacerations and open bite wounds. Authorities attempted to contact a local vet to treat the goat, but none could be reached.
The following morning, Carl was boarded, carried out and transported to Country Companions for treatment. His body temperature had dropped overnight and he needed to be stabilized, cleaned up and sedated. Carl required surgery on his left side and was temporarily stable before he died from the wounds on Saturday morning.
The initial investigation found that the bear may have climbed up a nearby tree to get into the fence enclosure, because there was no damage to the structure. ENCON investigators would later locate the 350-pound bear, who died from his injuries. The homeowner will not face any criminal charges due to state laws that protect people who are protecting their livestock from potential predators.
